Production on director Antoine Fuqua’s (Training Day) Tupac Shakur biopic Tupac is gearing up. The film is set to start shooting late this Spring or early this Summer. Fuqua announced the project as his next film last summer, with hopes of filming last fall, but it looks like it took a little longer to get everything together. The film will chronicle “the life and legacy of Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East coast/West coast rap war.” Speaking about the film, Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur-Davis had this to say:

“I am confident that Morgan Creek will stay true to the common goal we share of depicting Tupac’s life in a way that will allow the world to see the authenticity of his artistry, his hopes, and his life goals.“

Fuqua directs a script from Steve Bagatourian (American Gun), Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson (Ali). Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Here’s the full press release for Tupac from Morgan Creek Productions:

Los Angeles, CA February 10, 2011 – Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late Spring/early Summer on the biopic “TUPAC,” it was announced today James G. Robinson, Co-Chairman/CEO, and Rick Nicita, Co-Chairman/COO, of Morgan Creek Productions. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”), the film will be shot on location in Los Angeles, New York, Georgia and Las Vegas and is currently being cast.

The film chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East coast/West coast rap war.

In her support of the upcoming biopic of her late son, Afeni Shakur-Davis said, “I am confident that Morgan Creek will stay true to the common goal we share of depicting Tupac’s life in a way that will allow the world to see the authenticity of his artistry, his hopes, and his life goals.“

Commented producer LT Hutton,”I am honored to be part of the process that is bringing his life and legacy to the big screen. I am thankful to Afeni Shakur for giving this project her blessing and to Morgan Creek for giving it the green light.”

“TUPAC” will be produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson and LT Hutton, and executive produced by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur. The screenplay was written by Steve Bagatourian, Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson. Universal Pictures distributes in North America and co-distributes with Morgan Creek International overseas.

Morgan Creek’s next film, “DREAM HOUSE”, directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz will be released through Universal Pictures on September 30, 2011

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has had quite a career thus far. Since debuting in 1996 with hip-hop classic Reasonable Doubt, he has sold over 50 million records worldwide. He’s parlayed his musical success into lucrative businesses in the realms of fashion, cuisine and advertising (for more, check out my new Jay-Z book, which hits stores next week). Last year he earned $63 million, tops among hip-hop artists for the third time in four years.

But when it comes to net worth, Jay-Z is number two. The top spot goes to Sean “Diddy” Combs, who tops our accounting of rap’s richest with a fortune of $475 million, fueled by his interests in Sean John clothing, Bad Boy Worldwide record label and, most significantly, his Diageo joint-venture vodka brand Ciroc. Jay-Z ranks a close second, with $450 million.

In Pictures: Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists

Superproducer/rapper Dr. Dre ranks third with $125 million, fueled by past earnings generated from his own career and by helping to launch those of Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, a onetime Dr. Dre protege who reaped a nine-figure payday from the sale of Vitamin Water to Coca-Cola, rounds out the top five in a tie with Cash Money Records cofounder Bryan “Birdman” Williams at $100 million

Questions is this a new Dynasty or a huge Mistake?

No question, the Heat will be the team a lot of fans will love to hate as the three headed monster of Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade have agreed to play in Miami.

Wade had already agreed to come back to the only team he has ever played for, Free agent Bosh was next to fall in line. And tonight (July the man they call King James made his announcement on ESPN in an hour long special that had the feel of a championship game rather than a player simply picking the team he would play for.

Nothing short of at least one NBA Title will justify these three picking the same team to play for.

Cleveland becomes the biggest loser in this process, they go from perennial title contenders to also rans overnight.

ESPN Reports:

LeBron James is planning to announce the team with which he will sign during a one-hour special on ESPN Thursday night, ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard has learned through independent sources.

ESPN would only confirm that active discussions for the special are ongoing. But sources tell Broussard that representatives for James contacted the network, proposing that James makes his announcement during a 9 p.m. ET special.

Those sources said that James’ representatives requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the one-hour special, with the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and that ESPN agreed to the proposal but had not been told what James has decided.

The NBA’s most prized free agent opened a Twitter account on Tuesday and posted his first message on the social networking site. While he provided no information about his future plans, at least he offered something as the NBA awaits the decision on where he’ll play next.

“Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building,” said the tweet on the kingjames feed, which by 9 p.m. ET had more than 167,000 followers.

James’ publicist, Keith Estabrook, confirmed the superstar’s entrance to Twitter, a place where fellow prized free agents Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh often post details about their public lives off the floor.

James’ plans still are a closely guarded secret. He visited with six teams — the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls — last week at his business offices in downtown Cleveland.

Early Wednesday, it appeared that if James were to play next season with Wade and Bosh, he’d do it in Miami: Bosh has decided to join Wade with the Heat, a source with knowledge of the situation told Broussard. An announcement was expected later in the day.

ESPN’s Shelley Smith also reported that Bosh would join Wade in Miami.

It was not immediately clear whether Bosh would sign with Miami outright or join the Heat through a sign-and-trade deal. Bosh could earn $125 million over six years via sign-and-trade, but only $96 million over five without it.

If Bosh joins a team without doing a sign-and-trade, he will be able to sign only a five-year deal worth $96 million. He is determined not to leave that $29 million on the table, sources told Broussard.

“Either way, he’s definitely going to Miami,” the source said.

There had been various reports that the Toronto Raptors were working on a sign-and-trade deal with Cleveland for Bosh, and that James tried to convince him to join the Cavaliers. Both James and Bosh were aware that such a trade was possible, and James tried to recruit Bosh to the Cavaliers several times in the past few weeks, sources told Broussard.

But Bosh wanted to play with James in Cleveland, Chicago or Miami, and told the Raptors he’d accept sign-and-trades to those cities, sources told Broussard.

Unsure of James’ decision, the Nets have a Plan B in case he rejects their offer.

The agent for Knicks forward David Lee says the Nets have talked to him several times since free agency began on Thursday.

An official within the league who is very close to the Nets’ management team said the team would also consider going after Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer if James rejected the offer that was presented by new owner Mikhail Prokhorov and a team that included hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

Nets president and general manager Rod Thorn said in a text message on Tuesday that there was nothing to report on the free-agency front.

Asked about the Nets’ options if The King nixes their overtures, Thorn wrote:

“We will look at other options if we don’t get one of the top guys.”

While James is the star attraction in this summer’s stacked class of free agents, other players have either stayed home or found a new one. On Monday, Amare Stoudemire agreed to a five-year deal with the Knicks and said he would continue to recruit James to join him.

1. Washington Wizards — John Wall (PG – Kentucky Wildcats)

If the Wizards don’t pick John Wall here we might as well give Gilbert Arenas a hydrogen bomb to play with in the locker room because that franchise is going NOWHERE. If they do get him (and they most definitely will) they could be better than a fringe playoff team because a team with John Wall could lead my intramural basketball team to a few wins against NBA teams. Okay, against the Nets. But I digress, this is a no-brainer. Follow his twitter as we move along.

2. Philadelphia 76ers — Evan Turner (SG – Ohio State Buckeyes) As a Sixers fan, if they don’t draft Evan Turner at this spot I will personally look up General Manager Ed Stefanski’s kids, find them on the playground and berate them with mean words until they cry or their fellow classmates chase me with sticks. Then I can add another family to the list of people with restraining orders against me! Just like how I used to collect pogs.

3. New Jersey Nets — Derrick Favors (PF – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets) The consensus third-best prospect in the draft, this is the guy the Sixers are thinking about taking instead of Evan Turner. If this happens I will chop somebody’s balls off. Not mine, because they are valuable (to me). Though I wouldn’t put him in the same class as Turner, this guy’s still pretty talented. Check out this high school reel from a game where he scored 42 points, had 20 rebounds and 12 blocks. It really makes me want to head over to the local elementary school and teach them how it feels to face Dikembe Mutombo. (And I’m not referring to this).

4. Minnesota Timberwolves — DeMarcus Cousins (PF – Kentucky Wildcats) According to reports, DeMarcus Cousins refused to work out for the Timberwolves. You know what that means, we’ve found a perfect fit! Minnesota’s management’s favorite past-time is to drag players who want nothing to do with cold Minnesota winters and lock them into four year contracts. Maybe Cousins and Ricky Rubio can form a northern wasteland haters club. Plus he looks and plays a lot like Al Jefferson, and do you know how many times defenders will get them confused and blow assignments? Nobody ever takes these things into account.

5. Sacramento Kings — Greg Monroe (C – Georgetown Hoyas) The Kings just picked up center Samuel Dalembert from the 76ers. He is extremely useless. I can’t stress this enough. Here’s a guy who spent entire summers without picking up a basketball then expected fans to love him because he was a 6′11″ jumping jack who could run the floor and block the odd shot. In reality he has no offensive skills to speak of, barely knows who to pass it to when the ball’s in his hands, and had perfect hair for a headband yet never decided to actually wear one. From what I could see from the NCAA tournament (that I just re-affirmed with this youtube highlight reel) he’s a pretty agile big man with good rebounding ability who can actually dribble and do cool spin moves. He’s also obsessed with his baby hook, which is something I could never do so he must be pretty talented.

6. Golden State Warriors — Wes Johnson (SF – Syracuse Orange) The Warriors love running, and if there’s one thing Wes Johnson does especially well, it’s pumping those legs and getting Forrest Gump-y. Too bad he only shot 36.5% on jump shots last year but that just means he can pass the ball more often to Stephen Curry and we can all sit there in awe as he sinks jumper after jumper. Above all he’s an athletic talent, and I’m sure Don Nelson can mold him into something special. And if he can’t, those skinny arms would make a damn good scarecrow.

7. Detroit Pistons — Al-Farouq Aminu (SF – Wake Forest Demon Deacons) I watched this guy in the NCAA tournament, but unfortunately for him all I remember is the part where he fouled out and his team lost. No matter, the internet will be my guide for this one. After their horrendous season it’s about time the Pistons clean house and get rid of all of the guys from their championship teams, because all they do is probably brag about their big shiny rings and the time they used the NBA championship trophy as a bowling ball. It’s bringin’ down morale, man! That’s why Tayshaun Prince is on the trading block, and that’s why they’re going to pick up this Aminu fella to take his spot. Aminu’s a 6′7″ guy with a 7′3″ wingspan, which is great for being an albatross for Halloween. Unfortunately, he can’t really shoot very well, which isn’t a great fit for Detroit (Get it? Because the murder rate’s so high!). Hopefully his good work ethic and impeccable biceps will translate into NBA success.

8. Los Angeles Clippers — Gordon Hayward (SF – Butler Bulldogs) The darling of the NCAA tournament is also the token white man of this mock draft. He was one of the best high school tennis players in the country so that will definitely come in handy when he’s inevitably attacked by Ron Artest for having elbows that are too pointy. That excellent tennis swing will be great for chair wielding. Plus I have it on good authority from one of my many inside sources that the NBA will soon adopt a 5 point half court shot policy, and he’s not too shabby at those. He also has that uncanny ability to figure out precisely what his team needs to do to win in certain situations, which I saw in him and Evan Turner during the tournament. With Corey Maggette gone, the Clippers have a big hole at SF (and at every other position, really) and Hayward would be a great fill-in. His arms have great tattoo potential, and his sister’s pretty good looking.

9. Utah Jazz — Ed Davis (PF – North Carolina Tar Heels) Boozer’s probably gone, Andrei Kirilenko keeps getting hurt (presumably because of constant run-ins with a very confused flashback suffering Sylvester Stallone) and Mehmet Okur tore his achilles so the Jazz are in dire need of someone tall and able to do basketball related activities (Gheorghe Muresan, sit down) to team up with Paul Millsap. Though his name is boring, his game is filled with many dunks and leg flailing. You can check out a highlight reel here. Deron Williams is at that level of point-guarding where he can basically turn anyone into a magic man so if you’re into the fantasy basketball trip, and you shouldn’t because it’s excruciatingly boring, keep an eye out for whoever the Jazz pick up here. It’ll probably be Ed Davis unless some other tall guy with more skills drop down to 9.

10. Indiana Pacers — Luke Babbitt (SF/PF – Nevada) I lied, we have another white man in this hokey preview. At the moment, the Pacers have Josh McRoberts as their backup Power Forward. THAT WILL NOT DO. The only thing McRoberts should be backing up is a U-Haul truck bound for Manitoba. Danny Granger’s morphed into a pretty productive NBA talent but they could use another scorer. Plus they already have Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, Tyler Hansbrough, Jeff Foster and of course Josh McRoberts. If you’re that close to looking like a professional Duke empire, why not just embrace the fact and keep getting paler? Then they could record an adorable dance video to something dorky like the Cha Cha Slide that’ll result in millions and millions of youtube hits and incredibly bloated egos. And bloated egos equal NBA championships, just look at Kobe. Oh, it doesn’t work that way, you say? You also need talent? Bah, why not give it a try.

The combination of Cosby — an outspoken critic of profanity and violence in hip-hop culture — with work from a rapper who was shot and killed in 1996 is notable, but organizers said Tupac’s “Dear Mama” was a heartfelt homage to mothers struggling with addiction and poverty.

It’s also a “relatively tame” recording, and the cultural impact of hip-hop is undeniable, program coordinator Steve Leggett said. Tupac is the third rapper inducted, following Grandmaster Flash and Public Enemy.
